Overnight Index Swap (OIS): Meaning and Financial Significance
Introduction
An Overnight Index Swap (OIS) is an interest-rate derivative in which two parties exchange interest payments calculated using different interest-rate conventions, typically a fixed rate and a floating rate linked to a compounded overnight benchmark.
OIS contracts are widely used to manage interest-rate risk and assess market expectations about future monetary policy.
How an OIS works
In a typical fixed-for-floating OIS:
One party pays a fixed interest rate.
The other party pays a floating rate based on a specified overnight interest-rate benchmark compounded over the contract period.
Payments are calculated on an agreed notional principal.
The notional principal is generally not exchanged.
The exact cash-flow arrangements depend on the contract.
Uses of OIS
1. Hedging
Financial institutions use OIS contracts to manage exposure to changes in short-term interest rates.
2. Monetary policy expectations
OIS rates are monitored by market participants to assess expectations about future central-bank policy rates.
3. Interest-rate risk management
Banks and other institutions can use OIS contracts to manage mismatches between fixed-rate and floating-rate exposures.
4. Financial-market analysis
Changes in OIS rates can reflect shifts in expected policy rates, market liquidity, and risk conditions.
OIS in India
The Indian rupee OIS market is relevant to expectations concerning the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy. Overnight benchmarks and contract conventions determine how the floating leg is calculated.

OIS stands for Overnight Index Swap.
It is an interest-rate derivative.
A typical OIS exchanges fixed-rate and overnight-index-linked floating-rate payments.
The notional principal is generally not exchanged.
OIS rates can provide information about market expectations of future interest rates.
An OIS is not the same as an overnight loan or a currency swap.
The RBI's policy repo rate is a key reference for monetary policy analysis in India, but an OIS rate is a market price rather than an official policy rate.
