Mudh-Nyoma Airbase: Strategic Importance in Eastern Ladakh
Introduction: Mudh-Nyoma Air Force Station is a high-altitude military airfield in eastern Ladakh that strengthens India's ability to operate aircraft close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Key pointers
Location: Near Nyoma in Leh district, Ladakh.
Altitude: Approximately 13,700 feet above sea level.
Strategic setting: Eastern Ladakh, near the India–China border.
Organisation: Indian Air Force.
Historical role: The location was previously used as an advanced landing ground.
Operational importance: Supports air logistics, troop movement and other military operations in high-altitude areas.
Terrain challenges: Thin air, extreme temperatures and difficult mountainous terrain affect aircraft performance and ground operations.
Strategic relevance: Improves logistical resilience and operational reach in a sensitive border region.
Infrastructure requirements: High-altitude airfields require specialised runway, navigation, maintenance and safety arrangements.
UPSC focus: Mudh-Nyoma is associated with Ladakh and the Indian Air Force. Do not confuse it with Leh's Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, which also serves civilian aviation.
