National Large Solar Telescope (NLST): Objectives and Location
UPSC Notes
The National Large Solar Telescope is a proposed ground-based solar observatory designed to study the Sun's surface, magnetic fields and dynamic atmospheric processes.
The project is associated with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics.
Proposed features
A 2-metre-class optical and near-infrared telescope.
High-resolution observations of solar magnetic structures.
Research into solar flares, waves and other energetic phenomena.
Complementary observations to space-based solar missions, including Aditya-L1.
The proposed site is near Merak in Ladakh, close to Pangong Lake, at an altitude of approximately 4,200 metres.
Key Pointers for UPSC
Full form: National Large Solar Telescope.
Institution: Indian Institute of Astrophysics.
Proposed location: Merak, Ladakh.
Purpose: Ground-based solar observations.
NLST is distinct from Aditya-L1, India's space-based solar observatory.
The high-altitude location offers favourable atmospheric transparency for observations.
